GETTING TO UTILA

 

International Airlines Flying to Honduras

American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Taca Airlines, and Spirit Airlines (starting July 17/07) all offer non-stop service to San Pedro Sula and/or  Roatan. Check out www.kayak.com for some of the best prices available.

Daily flights

from Roatan, San Pedro Sula, and La Ceiba airports serve the Utila's new airport, 2km out of town, where taxis wait for the flights and take you to your hotel for L25 per person. Sosa Airlines and Atlantic Airlines provide scheduled service to Utila.

Charter flights  

Charter air service is available with Roatan Air and Morgan's Travel

The Utila Princess II (one hour crossing)

La Ceiba-Utila: departs 09:30  and 16:00. 

Utila-La Ceiba: departs 06.30, 14:00. 

 

ENTERTAINMENT AND ADVENTURE

Iguana Station – Come and see Utila’s own species of Iguana (and others) grow from egg to adult and learn about the local wildlife before they’re released into the wild.

Freshwater Caves – Take a refreshing dip into this natural pool whilst enjoying nature’s limestone formations. One cave is open, the other requires an underground climb. Take swimsuit, torches and candles.

Water Caye – Any local fisherman and his “dory” will take you and your friends to this uninhabited, palm-treed, white sanded Caye, west of Utila. Take drinks, food, snorkeling and cooking gear for an unforgettable day (or days) out on your own Caribbean deserted island.    Entrance L25 each (approx. $1.50 each)

Blue Bayou – at the end of Utila, where the road stops, the island’s best snorkeling and relaxing area starts. Bring a book, leave your worries. Hammocks, loungers, deck, reef access and refreshment on hand. Entrance L30 each. ($1.60)  

Chepe’s White Hole – Utila’s popular public beach is the perfect, place to mingle with the friendly locals, sunbathe, beach cook, snorkel, swim and gossip. Bring your hammock, sip a cold one..and “chill out, mon”.

Pumpkin Hill – the highest point on the island is worth a trek for a great panoramic view of Utila and neighboring Roatan. Take the “new airport” road out of town on feet, horse, or bikes for the 3km adventure.

Kayak to the North side – Rent kayaks from Gunther’s dive shop and cut through a lovely mangrove canal and lagoon to the ocean on the North side. Along the way view wildlife such as egrets, herons, cormorants, iguanas, orchids, mangrove, and if you’re lucky … boa constrictors! 1 hr gentle paddle sees nature at her best!

Spanish School – The Central American Spanish School operates successfully on Utila, offering quality Spanish courses for all levels by experienced teachers.

Cinema – fully Air Conditioned, fully Hot-dogged, the “Reef Cinema” shows the latest movies 5-6 nights a week, catering for all ages and tastes.

BICA – Bay Islands Conservation Association has an office on Utila’s main street, where workers and volunteers offer environmental education to the local school children, as well as conservation projects, beach clean-ups and recycling. Volunteer or pass by and see how you can help keep Utila beautiful!

 

Local Information for a great lifestyle

Schools – Utila offers education from Kindergarten to Grade 12, in private school or the public bi-lingual schools. Choose from Adventist, Methodist college, National Public or Miss Phyla’s private school.

Healthcare - Utila is well serviced by two main clinics and their experienced resident doctors. Utila Community Clinic is open Mon-Sat from 8.00am – 12.00am to see American practicioners with X-ray facilities on site. Centro de Salud has same hours serviced by the Spanish speaking highly experienced  Cuban doctor.  Both facilities provide 24 hr emergency call-outs.

Pharmacies- From natural to pharmaceutical goods, open 08.00 – 20.00, with associated laboratories, they provide all that’s needed for the ills and chills

Hyperbaric Chamber- Utila Lodge houses the Chamber and Trauma centre for diving emergencies with easy access by road or sea.

Churches- A spiritually alive community, Utila and the Cayes offer daily services, including Adventist, Baptist, Catholic, Church of God, Methodist and Mormon places of worship. All are welcome.

Internet Services- Stay in touch with “the other world” via the wireless Internet network from $60 USD per month.  Alternatively, choose from any of the Internet cafes providing Internet, Fax, Telephone, CD burning, photos, scanning, photocopies, and laminating services.

Supermarkets- Utila has a good selection of stores and mini supermarkets providing fresh veggies, fruits, meats, seafood, dairy goods etc. Home deliveries possible from most.

Drinking Water - most homes are not equipped with drinking water, so Johnny’s Water and Island Spring are family-run companies that offer delivery of purified drinking water and ice. Also, a 100,000 gallons per day de-salination plant has been donated by the Spanish Government for the whole island & is coming soon!

Hardware stores- the constant supply from the mainland keeps the shelves well stocked with anything from pens to pushchairs, gifts to gadgets.

Construction Materials - can be ordered through lumberyards and hardware stores on Utila, or privately. 2 freight boats service the island twice weekly, bringing all from building materials & butane tanks to golf carts and scooters.

 

Town Services

Municipality - Utila’s Mayor, Alton Cooper, and his staff will attend you Mon-Fri 08.00 –17.00,for advice, legal documents, civil marriages, land taxes etc.

UPCO Power Company - Utila now has 24-hr electricity provided by a private company. Each house has a meter on a pay-as-you-go system

Immigration Service - Most visitors are entitled to 6 months in Honduras, then you must leave the country for 3 days. Visit Utila’s resident officer for a visa, and pay a fee of L300 a month ($20 USD monthly) for up to 6 months.

Port Captain- All seafarers must report to his office in Municipality buildings, on main public dock.

Police- Stationed at the baseball field, off Bamboo Walk, the Spanish-speaking National Civil Police will deal with problems. The 2-cell jail is also located there.

Fire Service- The volunteer brigade operate from Utila Lodge, 24 hr call out.

Banks- – BGA and Banco Atlantida are open Mon-Fri 08.30 – 15.30 and Sat 08.30 -11.30. Services include VISA card cash advance, International money  transfers via MoneyGram and UPCO payments.

 

Out and about

Bar in the Bush- Utila’s legendary night out is open every Friday from 6pm-3am. The ultimate party where locals and tourists dance away to DJ Bones’s reggae, punta, salsa and hip-hop. NO excuses, it’s local law to shake your booty!

Coco Loco’s- the infamous sea-side bar on a dock. Enjoy sunset drinks and chats every day until midnight. Theme nights and friendly atmosphere.

Tranquila- next door to Coco’s, hammocks and driftwood designs. Good music, cocktails and imported booze. Relaxed, sea-side bar and restaurant

Treetanic- attractive bar in a treehouse! Decorated by artist, Neil Keller, serves cocktails and national drinks in an intimate atmosphere, next to Jade Seahorse.

Skid Row Bar-Located in Sandy Bay the Pirate Bar is the place to hear great music cold drinks and even a chance to listen in on some authentic pirate tales.

 

Where to dine

Thompson’s Bakery- the only local bakery on Utila, best place for breakfast. Open everyday 6.30 am til noon, serving fruit and cooked breakfasts, smoothies, coconut bread and Johnny cakes. Eat-in or take away.

Island Café- next to Coco Loco’s. Great local cooking. Fish plates and steaks. Lunch and Dinner. Outside eating.

Bundu Café-  Some of the best coffee on the island. A selection of Cappuccino, Espresso, Latte, Mocha and regular coffee. Opens Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Light foods, such as sandwiches, quiches and a daily lunch special available. Best book exchange in town, as well as a good source of information on local tours. Curry nights and Live music  in the hot Utila nights.  

Seven Seas- great local cooking for lunch and dinner. Fish, Seafood, salads, burgers, chicken dishes. Popular with islanders and tourists alike.

Mango Café and Pizzeria- inside Mango Inn hotel. Pleasant setting, serving home made pizzas, seafood, pasta dishes, imported wines and spirits.

Mermaids- buffet meals all day. Compile your own plate from daily choices. Deliveries offered. Also offer fast-food “combo” dishes.

Las Delicias- great local bar and eatery, serves generous portions of pasta, burgers and dinner plates, along with lively local chat and island characters.

Jade Seahorse- Incredible decoration makes for a unique dining experience. Lunch and dinner, serves quality local and international dishes.

Kate’s La Piccola-  Italian restaurant, serves homemade pasta, delicious Italian dishes. Quality imported wines. In town centre. Open Saturday through Wednesday.

Munchies- open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Located in Utila’s historic “Island House” in centre. Light meals, sandwiches and Island dishes.

Margaritaville- in Sandy Bay, on a dock with great views of the harbour. Local dishes, fish and burgers in pretty setting.

Delany’s Kitchen- located in Cooper’s Inn, good pizza and lasagna dishes as well as local cuisine and daily specials.

Ultralight- specializing in Israeli food, great Vegetarian dishes as well as meats. Homemade Pita bread. Locally run and in the Sandy Bay area.

RJ’s BBQ Grill- open Wed, Fri and Sat at 5pm, taste great steak plates, as well as fish and chicken. Freshly grilled with trimmings. Located before the bridge.

Gelateria and Café- taste homemade ice creams, banana splits and all kinds of delicious coffee, lattes and espressos. Sip and socialize under the Mango tree.

And of course, the DIVING….

Utila is famed as one of the cheapest places in the world to get certified. All dive shops offer quality PADI courses from beginner (Open Water Diver) through to Divemaster. Advanced, Medic First Aid, Rescue or Fun dive packages are all available. Many shops offer free accommodation and dives as part of the deal.

And why?...... well, Utila is home to beautiful coral reefs and sea mountains surrounding its entire coastline. From the sloping reef of the south side to the dramatic drop-offs on the north side, divers of all experience levels will not be disappointed. Owing to its deep waters, Utila also hosts the magnificent whale sharks. They are known to raise young here and are often sighted feeding at the surface. Its best to snorkel with these gentle giants for an unforgettable experience. Most dive boats look out for them between dives.

Manta Rays, Spotted Eagle Rays, Nurse Sharks, Dolphins, Seahorses, Turtles and numerous tropical reef fish, corals and sponges are among the reef’s delights! Try it!
